What are organic cosmetics and what's the difference with conventional ?

certifications, labels, french regulations.

What is Ecocert and Cosmebio ?

Ecocert is an organic certification organization, founded in France in 1991. It is based in Europe but conducts inspections in over 80 countries, making it one of the largest organic certification organizations in the world.

Cosmebio is the world association of organic cosmetics, founded in France in 2002. It represents 420 companies (around 500 brands and more than 12000 labeled products).

For a product or ingredient to be labeled as ECOCERT or COSMEBIO, 95% or more of the product or ingredient must be non-GMO, free of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes, and can not be processed using industrial solvents or irradiation.
But, if you cannot farm it, it cannot be organic! So water, minerals, vitamins and wild plants are not organic, even though those are great ingredients.

The remaining 5% may only be processed with additives on an approved list. While all organic ingredients and products must be non-GMO, just being non-GMO does not mean the same as organic.
